Obsessive followers would have noted of late most of my works of the past year are based around the art of tattoo and graphic design. Many artists go through dramatic changes as their lives influence their decisions and their work. I am one such example../.
I have recently started work as a tattoo apprentice at Black Sails Tattoo Brighton, because of this i am finding less and less time for painting and creating Fine Art, it also means i have less and less space for my previous works and my new work expands and takes over i must make room for such changes. I have always been an advocate of free art, street exhibitions and vandalism, In a fond farewell to some of my earliest “serious” art works i found the perfect place to wave goodbye and grow a little… .. ././. Franz’s Many Heads Left Scattered On The Beach.. . . ./// ./
Today i took a walk along Brighton beach with a bag of heads.. ././. . ../. Though i felt a bit bad for leaving them there, i didnt think they’d last long and at the very least they’d be returned to a natural origin.. / ./. So my conscience wasn’t too heavy i left with a couple of buckets of beach rubbish, leaving the beach better than i found it.,. . ..// .
These slate paintings were painted over two years ago, from a series of photographs i took at a small intimate gig at the Bargate Monument in Southampton. The head in question was that of Franz Nicolay.. . /. Good bye Nicolay. /.

You may remember, if you are a regular follower, the 100 pigeons exhibited in my last show ‘Pecking At The Sidelines’
Last week i set them free in Brighton, sadly but consciously in their most inhabited environment, The window ledges of empty buildings.. . ./.
They lasted two days. .. ./. I hope they are loved. . /.

I quite excited for this show as it has a lot of new unseen pieces in and 100 original pigeons on display.. /./. Its set to be my most colorful show to date!

Blogging wise it has been rather quite here in the build up to xmas, that’s because all of the paintings i was working on were in fact gifts and so obviously i couldn’t publish them. So here is a backlog of paintings. / /./.
The first wave was a fresh new batch of xmas pigeons, this time with a festive slant i have become only slightly obsessed by snow flakes. ./
The second wave of paintings was a set of portraits../. not something you’d associate with me.. and furthermore they were both painted on canvas./. another thing you would not associate with me. It s always a good thing to take my self out of my usual sphere of working, both of the canvases were still reclaimed and recycled and i feel like despite working from photographs i managed to inject plenty of Belbin hallmarks to the pieces.

I’m sure that most of us when walking the streets pay very little attention to our immediate surroundings and the creatures we share it with. Most of it gets swept past our eyes and shoved off the pavement as we rush to be somewhere we most likely don’t want to be. These birds, in a way are much like you. They are somewhere they don’t want to be and they want to go home to the one they love. So if you’re the lucky one happen across one of these stray birds take them in and they will love you always,.. . /. /././ .
Go one step further, for each bird left on the street there is an equal and opposite waiting. Bring them to the show where their loved one awaits.. ./.

Tomorrow i am set to separate the love birds.. . potentially forever. /. It’s there last night together in the warmth./. They are saying their farewells and enjoying what time is left.

Love Birds Free Art Giveaway. /.
As part of the Solo Exhibition Fragments there will be a free art giveaway in the build-up to the show. This side project is based around the theme of the show that everything experienced remembered and observed is fragmented, everything that is can be said to be broken or fractured in some way or made up of different elements. And it is with that in mind that I have painted pairs of ‘Love Birds’ both of these creatures complement and complete each other in a way that for most lovers is just a fantasy. But like everything I see that holds real beauty there is a drama and tragedy to that story and so for these birds it’s the same.
I plan to split up each couple and display them separately. One set of the love birds will be displayed in the warmth and safety of the Jewry street gallery and the other halves of the pigeons I will display around the streets of Winchester exposed to the elements and are destined to be given away for free. But there is hope for each couple, the birds left out in the cold of the urban landscape will hold this message../. .

The finder will be invited to bring their pigeon to the show on opening night and reunite it with its partner. The pigeons on display at the gallery will be available for sale if the finder wishes to reunite them for good. Other people will be able to buy the pigeons on display even if they have not found the partner but finders will have priority over any bidders.
It is my hope that all the pigeons will find their way back to the show and all the couples will be reunited, once reunited if bought, the finders will be invited to leave the corresponding pigeons with their partners until the end of the show at which point both will be sent to their new home. Through doing this I hope to highlight that when in this fragmented world two pieces fit together it is the most important thing to keep them together. In this drama of being separated, once reunited the pigeons bond and the owners resolve to keep them together will be solidified.

Terra Nova.. ./. Love You To Death. . / ./.
Following on from yesterdays post. . /. /
The “Terra Nova” exhibition held at Yum Yum Ninja was based around the idea of reusing and recycling. All the pieces i exhibited in the show were all made from reused materials (electric fuse box doors and record sleeves). In the run up to the show i was asked to perform some live art, as always i had a very loose concept and was going to leave it up to accident and chaos on the night. My plan was to build a ‘canvas’ on site and paint it there and then. But on the way to the show i found a set of old blinds thrown out on the street, and it was all too perfect an accident to pass up, it fitted perfectly with the recycle and reuse concept and because it looked like a scroll unrolled it tied in with the theme of the Japanese restaurant. I picked it up and decided to paint that at the show instead../. the perfect blend of planning and chaos.. /. .//. I ended up calling the piece “Love You TO Death” .. /. And i have no idea what happened to it after the show.. /. ??

As part of I LOVE ART UK (13 women show) i have been invited to exhibit some of my work ad work in the “Spray Your Own Art” section of the stand. I am very pleased to be involved with this local project.. /. i have a bunch of pigeons ready for sale all listed below, as well as whole host of other paintings and prints. I wont be the only person exhibiting so be sure to make your face known and pay us a visit on Sunday 30th June.
If nothing takes your fancy then you can make your own piece of work there and then to take away with you in the “Spray Your Own Art” section. For a single fee you will have your surface, a lot of spray paint and the use of plenty of stencils.. /. Regulars to my blog would have noted that last Upfest i also painted at the notorious Rock & Bowl hostel, Every Upfest they open up their doors and invite artists from around the world to leave their mark at the hostel. Last year i was honored to be offered a space of my own and leapt on the opportunity https://jakobbelbin.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/rock-n-bowl/ Though this year i was not staying at the hostel, their winsome manager “Matty B” extended the same offer to me once more. This time round i was a year older and had a partner in crime so i went for something completely different and chose a completely different space under the recommendation of Matty B. Its the only dark wall in the hostel and is the entrance to the smoking area. . / ./. These devastating beauty’s are 8 feet tall and were painted in about 2-3hours . /.// // …./ .

This weekend it was Upfest 2013, last year i traveled alone and met a great bunch of people and I had an amazing time. This year was different, I had a partner in crime and this years festival was all the better for it, we met more fantastic people, created and absorbed some amazing art and drank a lot of drink. /. / . ///. She also contributed on both pieces by writing all the Japanese for me. /. Theres so many pictures so first im just going to show you the piece i did for the festival../.
